Blog, blog, blog…  oh btw, I’m engaged!

blog, blog, blog…   I don’t like how blog sounds.  The word sounds like it means ‘big log’ or ‘black ogg’  (whatever an ogg is).

Oh!  So I won this phone two weekends from this post.  Very exciting.  I went on a treasure hunt sponsored by one of the
country’s (Malaysia) biggest telecoms, Maxis. At the end, they were
giving away a whole bunch of (old) phones as lucky draws or prizs to the
top hunting teams. I was fortunate to win a motorola A768i. It seemed
like an ok phone, but the speaker wasn’t working. I went to the event
sponsor and they apologized because they ran out of A768i’s. Since they
were out of those, they instead gave me an e680! I wasn’t too impressed
until I found out it was a mini computer with linux!

That’s right, linux… running MontaVista version 3.0 using linux kernel 2.4.20.   Linux phone, big deal right?  Exactly.  What do you think of when you hear the word linux?  Not many apps?  Maybe, but it’s got Java so apps are easy to come by with time.  Command line?  ls?  top?  ps axw? swapon /mmc/mmca1/swap/swapfile?  Shells?  Shell scripts?  Total control of your phone?  SSH-ing into your server? Fixing a server problem while in the car or waiting for your girlfriend to finish trying on some clothes?  piggy-backing an internet connection using bluetooth?  1GB SD card enabled?  Upgrading to the next phone model when Motorola is too cheap to upgrade the hardware? (I flashed my phone’s memory except the bootloader and installed an image file containing the OS of an e680i)  After being able to upgrade to virtually a whole new phone… getting a full HTML browser called Opera and a pdf, word, excel viewer called picsel.  Not mention that it increases the SD card capability from 1GB to 2GB (not tested… who really needs a 2GB SD card… it’s not like i can watch movies on this phone… oh wait.. I can!)

Obviously, my warranty is probably voided by now.  Aside from that, the only downer to this phone is that I cannot EDIT MS Word or MS Excel files.  I can view them perfectly, but no changes can be made.  Oh and it eats batteries like they were wheaties(TM)…  although no one really likes, you find that you just eat them and don’t notice that you’vefinished your bowl.   Wheaties taste gross, and so do batteries.

I don’t usually post this much.  I’m strangely inspired today.  I think I’ll repost this on my xanga blog also.

Btw, have i mentioned that I’m getting married?  Why not write about that you say?  How much can you write about marriage?  Sau Theng is a great girl and everyone has been to at least one marriage.  If you are reading this, you most likely know much about both…  but you don’t know much about this great phone :)

What?! Another blog!? Exclamation marks galore!!1!!one!111!!eleven!
